& music

I don't have one particular favorite type of music. I listen to pretty much every genre. The only genre that doesn't really do a whole lot for me is rap, but I'll listen to a bit of it.

I'm far too lazy to compile a CD list (I have over 200 now) or an mp3 list (let's not discuss that number). I know that's the "cool" thing to do, but my hands would probably mutiny before I could even get half-way through my imports.

I don't really have a favorite band in the way that most other people seem to. I go through phases. The only band I've consistently loved for years has been U2. Even during their terrible techno-experimental years, I still thought they were incredible. I suppose that makes them the closest thing to a favorite band that I have. I also really enjoy Travis, Coldplay, the Dixie Chicks, The Juliana Theory, Wilco, Dave Matthews Band, Tara MacLean, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, Feeder, Sarah McLachlan, Jimmy Eat World, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Three Dog Night, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Weezer, the Doors, James Taylor, Diana Krall, the Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Dashboard Confessional, Madonna, Michelle Branch, and various others.

I was raised on a combination of what I heard my father listening to, my mother listening to, and my siblings listening to. My father is a Dead Head. He introduced me to the Beatles, the Stones, Jefferson Airplane, CCR, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, the Doors, and countless others. My best musical taste is all from him. My mother is more of an oldies fan. She was always playing the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Supremes, Elvis Presley, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, and the like. My mother's the kind of person who thinks the Beatles topped out after appearing on Sullivan, whereas my father stands by Revolver and the White Album as being their greatest accomplishments. With my siblings, I listened to a lot of 80s and early 90s music. I'm one of the few people in my age group who truly believes that Modern English was a great band, even if they only did have that one song. I love Madonna's first slew of albums, thanks to my sister Amy. I get giddy when Soft Cell comes on the radio during flashback hours.

All of this makes for an odd combination of musical tastes. My friends torture me for it. I think they're just jealous that I can sing along with Steppenwolf and they can't. :p
